How to Know When It's Time for New Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are a great way to add length and volume to your everyday look, but no matter how well you look after them they won't last forever. Over time, even the highest quality professional hair (like our very own Spectrum One Hair Extensions) will start to show signs of wear and tear. Here’s what to look out for to ensure you’re not holding onto your hair extensions for too long.

How Long Should I Expect My Hair Extensions To Last?
x
With the correct after care, our professional Spectrum One Hair Extensions and any other brand of professional hair should typically last between 9 to 12 months. However, the lifespan can vary depending on how well you care and maintain them and your lifestyle too. Eventually, all hair extensions will degrade and need to be replaced and you’ll notice this from the general look and feel of them. When you reach that time to invest in some brand new locks, here's all you need to look out for so that you know it’s the right time to replace your hair.

Signs It's Time to Replace Your Professional Hair Extensions
- Split Ends and Shedding - Just like natural hair, hair extensions can develop split ends and start shedding over time. However, unlike natural hair, these signs are often more noticeable in extensions, making them look worn out and there’s no amount of hair oil that can fix dead hair. If you notice excessive split ends or shedding, it’s a clear sign that your hair extensions are ready to be replaced.
- Dryness and Frizziness - Hair extensions don’t receive the natural oils from your scalp that are needed to maintain that healthy hair look, which can lead to them drying out faster than your natural hair. Without the correct aftercare they can become frizzy and unmanageable. While regular oiling (we recommend applying oil to the mid-lengths and ends 2-3 times a day) can help maintain moisture, there comes a point when no amount of care can restore the softness of your hair extensions. If dryness and frizz become unmanageable, it’s time to consider a replacement.
- Matting or Tangling - Excessive matting or tangling is a major indicator that your hair extensions are past their prime. Over time, repeated washing, drying and styling can cause extensions to become more prone to knots, which can lead to further shedding and damage. While deep conditioning treatments can help reduce tangling, persistent issues with matting are a sign that your hair extensions need to be replaced.
- Dull or Faded Colour - Even though high quality extensions are treated with long lasting colour, they will eventually fade after months of wear and tear. This process is gradual, typically around the 9 month mark. If you notice your hair extensions looking dull or brassy, it’s a sign that they’re ready to be swapped out for a new set.
Extending the Life of Your Hair Extensions

To maximise the lifespan of your professional hair extensions, follow these tips:
- Regular Conditioning: Use deep conditioning treatments to keep your hair extensions hydrated (we suggest and love the Original Minerals Project Sukuroi)
- Trimming: Treat your hair to regular trims to prevent split ends from travelling up the hair shaft.
- Correct aftercare: Always follow all aftercare advice that’s given, including avoiding excessive heat styling and using sulphate-free shampoos. We suggest our latest Spectrum One Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner.

By paying attention to these signs, you can ensure your hair extensions will always be looking their best. When the time comes to replace them, investing in a new set will help you maintain the fresh, gorgeous locks that you love. Oh and don't forget, aftercare is KEY!
